The MW4 Tactical Nuke is the ultimate Multiplayer streak in Modern Warfare 4. To earn one, you need to get 30 qualifying kills without dying, and kills from your normal Killstreak rewards do not count.

Once you reach the requirement, the Tactical Nuke becomes available to call in. Activating it triggers MW4's unique extraction sequence, destroys the battlefield, ends the match, and gives your team the win.

How Does the MW4 Tactical Nuke Work?

The Tactical Nuke is a hidden streak available to every player in MW4 Multiplayer. You do not need to equip it as one of your three normal Killstreaks before entering a match.

Instead, the Nuke is always available in the background. If you reach the required 30-kill streak without dying, the game gives you the option to call it in.

Unlike regular Killstreaks, earning the Tactical Nuke immediately gives you the ability to end the match regardless of the current score.

How to Get a Tactical Nuke in MW4

You need to get 30 qualifying kills without dying to earn the MW4 Tactical Nuke.

The 30 kills must be earned during the same life. Getting 30 total kills across an entire match does not count if you die in between them.

Your Nuke streak resets when you die, so a player sitting on 29 qualifying kills must survive and get one more before being eliminated.

Live MW4 gameplay has also confirmed which types of kills contribute toward the Nuke.

Which Kills Count Toward the MW4 Nuke?

Kills earned using your weapons, equipment, and Field Upgrades can contribute toward the 30-kill Tactical Nuke streak.

The important exception is your normal Killstreak rewards. You cannot build most of your Nuke streak by letting an Attack Helicopter, Gunship, or another Killstreak farm kills for you.

This makes the Tactical Nuke significantly harder to earn than reaching a normal high-tier Killstreak. You still need to personally survive and build almost the entire streak through your own combat.

Do Killstreak Kills Count Toward the MW4 Nuke?

No. Kills earned by normal Killstreak rewards do not count toward the MW4 Tactical Nuke.

For example, if you have 20 qualifying kills and your active Killstreak gets another five kills, those five Killstreak kills will not move your Tactical Nuke progress to 25.

You still need to reach 30 qualifying kills yourself without dying.

Do You Need to Equip the Tactical Nuke?

No. You do not need to equip the MW4 Tactical Nuke.

The Nuke is separate from the three normal Killstreak rewards you select in your loadout. It is effectively a hidden streak that remains available to every player.

This means you can choose your normal UAV, air support, or other Killstreak setup without losing access to the Tactical Nuke.

What Happens When You Reach a 30 Killstreak?

Once you reach 30 qualifying kills without dying, MW4 notifies you that the Tactical Nuke is available.

You can then activate the Nuke and begin the final Nuclear Protocol sequence. Calling it in does not simply cause another explosion while the match continues. The Tactical Nuke takes over the end of the game.

The sequence works roughly like this:

  • You reach 30 qualifying kills without dying.
  • The Tactical Nuke becomes available to activate.
  • You call in the Nuke.
  • The final Nuclear Protocol sequence begins.
  • Your Operator is attached to a skyhook extraction system.
  • A passing aircraft pulls your Operator away from the battlefield.
  • The nuclear weapon detonates below.
  • The match ends and your team wins.

MW4 also adds some personality to the sequence. During the extraction, the Operator gives the players left behind a final middle-finger gesture before the Nuke detonates.

This gives the MW4 Tactical Nuke its own unique ending instead of simply reusing the Nuke animations from previous Modern Warfare games.

Does the Tactical Nuke End the Game in MW4?

Yes. Calling in the MW4 Tactical Nuke ends the match and gives your team the victory.

This makes the Nuke different from almost every other Multiplayer Killstreak. The current score does not need to be close to the normal score limit for the match to finish.

Once the Nuke is successfully called in, the extraction and detonation sequence begins and the game ends with your team winning.

That means a Tactical Nuke can completely change the result of a match, even if the opposing team was ahead before it was activated.

Can You Get a Nuke in the MW4 Beta?

Yes. The Tactical Nuke can be earned in the Modern Warfare 4 Beta.

Players earned Nukes during live Beta gameplay, which is how several of the Nuke's mechanics were confirmed. The Early Access Beta runs from August 21 to August 25, followed by the free Open Beta from August 28 to September 1.

If you are playing during the test, you can check our complete MW4 Beta maps and modes guide to see which maps and playlists are currently available.

The Nuke itself does not need to be unlocked through Beta levels or selected as a normal Killstreak. If you can build the required 30 qualifying kills without dying in a supported Multiplayer match, you can earn it.

What is not yet fully confirmed is whether every single MW4 Multiplayer mode and playlist allows Tactical Nukes. We will update this guide if Infinity Ward confirms any mode-specific restrictions.

How Hard Is It to Get a Nuke in MW4?

Getting 30 qualifying kills without dying makes the Tactical Nuke one of the hardest Multiplayer achievements in MW4.

There is a major difference between finishing a match with 30 kills and getting all 30 during the same life. A single death at 29 kills means starting the Nuke streak again from zero.

You also cannot rely on powerful Killstreaks to complete the requirement for you. This puts more importance on aim, positioning, movement, map knowledge, spawn awareness, and knowing when to avoid an unnecessary fight.

Some basic principles can make a Nuke attempt more manageable:

  • Prioritize staying alive over chasing every available kill.
  • Use positions with more than one escape route.
  • Watch for enemy spawn changes as your team moves around the map.
  • Avoid unnecessary close-range fights late in your streak.
  • Use UAV information and teammate callouts whenever possible.
  • Keep enough ammunition available for a long streak.
  • Choose weapons you can use consistently at several ranges.

Learning the current weapon pool is also important when building a Nuke loadout. You can check our MW4 Beta weapons and unlocks guide for the weapons currently available during the test.
