All 33 MW4 Operators and How to Unlock Them

The complete Modern Warfare 4 launch roster is split across free, gameplay, and paid unlock methods. The table below covers all 33 Operators confirmed for Multiplayer and DMZ, so you can find a character without searching through different menus.


These are Operator character unlocks, not Operator levels, individual skins, or weapon rewards. You can also check Activision's official Operator roster for the original requirements.

How to Unlock MW4 Operators Through Campaign Missions

Eight MW4 Operators come from completing specific Campaign missions. You do not need a separate Multiplayer kill challenge for these characters. Finishing the required story mission earns its Base Operator reward.



Campaign Early Access players can earn these rewards before the full game launches. Activision confirms that the Campaign Operators become usable in Multiplayer and DMZ when Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23.

How to Unlock MW4 Operators in Multiplayer

Five Operators are locked behind Multiplayer combat challenges. These requirements count kills against enemy players, so focus on completing the exact action shown rather than simply earning general match XP.

Tips for Completing Multiplayer Operator Challenges

• Blackwell: Play for survival. You need three kills in one life, repeated 10 times, so avoid unnecessary fights when you are close to a three-kill streak.
• Jae: Use a controllable SMG or shotgun at close range and fire without aiming down sights.
• Velikan: Look for groups of enemies in fast-respawn modes where double kills are easier to set up.
• Valen: Use longer sightlines and an accurate weapon to earn kills that register as longshots.
• Zimo: Focus on accurate, head-height crosshair placement rather than spraying at the body.

Your best approach depends on the kill type. Check the Operator menu to track progress, and choose weapons that match the requirement. Exact longshot distances and the fastest launch playlists should be checked in the live game.

How to Unlock MW4 Operators in DMZ

Four Operators unlock by increasing your DMZ Player Level. Unlike the Multiplayer Operators above, they do not require specific headshots, double kills, or kill streaks.


To work toward these unlocks, complete DMZ Orders, Story Missions, and other deployment objectives, and earn XP through combat and looting in Hajin. Your goal for all four level-based Operators is DMZ Player Level 19.

Important: Your DMZ Player Level is not the same as your individual Active Duty Operator's Dog Tag level. DMZ Player Level progresses from 1 to 70, while each Active Duty Operator has an 18-level Dog Tag and separate Trait progression.

MW4 Pre-Order and Vault Edition Operators

Nine launch Operators are tied to a digital pre-order or the Vault Edition. These are purchase entitlements, not standard Campaign, Multiplayer, or DMZ progression rewards.

How to Unlock Hunter Killer

Hunter Killer is included when you digitally pre-order the Standard or Vault Edition of Modern Warfare 4. The pre-order reward is an Operator Skin, and Activision lists Hunter Killer as an Operator entry in the launch roster.

How to Unlock the Eight Vault Edition Operators

The Vault Edition includes two four-Operator packs. You do not need to complete the Multiplayer or DMZ challenges listed above to receive their included characters.



You can get the Vault Edition through a qualifying purchase or upgrade. Buying only the Digital Standard Edition does not include the eight Vault Edition Operators, although an eligible digital pre-order includes Hunter Killer. See the official edition benefits for the complete package details.

Free and Special Unlock MW4 Operators

Five Operators are selectable immediately, without completing any challenges: Min-Hee, CTSFO, Mil-Sim KSK Arctic, UCTF, and Army SF Airborne. All five belong to the South Korean Quick Reaction Force faction in Activision's launch list.

How to Unlock Kyle

Kyle is associated with the Call of Duty Endowment Valor Pack. This is a special pack entitlement, not a Multiplayer challenge or an automatic reward from leveling your account.

How to Unlock Ju Kwon

Ju Kwon's unlock requirement is currently marked CLASSIFIED in Activision's official Operator list. There is no confirmed mission, challenge, or level requirement to recommend yet.

How to Equip and Change Operators in MW4

Modern Warfare 4 lets you assign a different Operator to each Multiplayer loadout. That means you can use one character for a close-range class and another for your long-range build instead of choosing a single Operator for every class.

• Reach Player Level 4 to unlock Create-a-Class in Multiplayer.
• Open the Multiplayer menu and select Create-a-Class.
• Choose the loadout you want to customize, then select the Operator field at the top.
• Pick any Operator you have unlocked. Repeat for other loadouts if you want different characters.

Before Level 4, you can use premade Default Loadouts. DMZ has a separate Active Duty Operator system managed through the Operators Station in the Forward Operating Base, with its own Dog Tag levels, Traits, and deployment equipment.

Can you unlock every MW4 Operator for free?

No. Five Operators are free immediately, and 17 more come from Campaign missions, Multiplayer challenges, and DMZ level progression. The other 11 entries include pre-order, Vault Edition, Valor Pack, and classified unlocks, so not all 33 are confirmed to be earnable through gameplay alone.

Are MW4 Operators shared between Multiplayer and DMZ?

Yes. Activision confirms the 33 launch Operators are available in both modes once unlocked. However, each Active Duty Operator's DMZ-specific Dog Tag, Traits, and equipment are separate from the character's basic unlock.

Can you use MW4 Operators in Warzone?

What is the difference between unlocking an Operator and leveling a DMZ Operator?

Unlocking an Operator gives you access to that playable character. Leveling a DMZ Active Duty Operator increases that specific Operator's Dog Tag, earning Trait Points and progressing toward Operator Prestige. They are two different systems.

How do you unlock Ju Kwon in MW4?

Ju Kwon's unlock condition has not been revealed. Activision lists the requirement as CLASSIFIED, so no verified method is available yet.
