Trying to max every gun in Modern Warfare 4? The weapon grind has changed. Each gun still has its own levels, but compatible attachments are shared, and duplicate unlocks can trigger Bonus Level Ups. That means your next weapon may be faster to finish than your first. This guide explains MW4 weapon leveling, all 33 launch weapon caps, Weapon Prestige, and the best ways to earn Weapon XP.

How Weapon Leveling Works

Every Modern Warfare 4 gun has a separate Weapon Level. You earn Weapon XP (WXP) by using that weapon, then unlock Gunsmith options and camo milestones as its level rises. For example, the M4 has 72 normal levels, while the .50 GS has just 37.

Weapon Level is not the same as Player Level. Your main Multiplayer rank unlocks access to weapons, equipment, and other account features. MW4 also has a separate DMZ Player Level track. Those ranks do not replace the level shown in a gun's own Progression menu.

Are weapon levels shared between Multiplayer and DMZ?

Yes. MW4 uses global weapon progression across Multiplayer and DMZ. Leveling an M4 in DMZ raises the same M4 Weapon Level used in Multiplayer, so you do not have to max it separately in each mode. Warzone joins MW4's progression ecosystem with its Season 1 integration.

To check a gun's progress, open its Gunsmith Progression screen. It shows the level track, the next attachment or camo reward, and the maximum level needed before Weapon Prestige becomes available.

Shared Attachments & Bonus Levels

The most important change in MW4 is that compatible attachments unlock only once. If you earn an optic, muzzle, laser, or another attachment on one weapon, that same attachment is available for every other gun that supports it. You do not have to level a different gun to obtain attachments for your favorite weapon, either.

What is a Bonus Level Up in MW4?

When you reach a weapon level that would award an attachment already unlocked on your account, the game skips that duplicate reward level and gives you a Bonus Level Up. Your gun still starts at its own first level, but you may not have to earn every intermediate level through normal Weapon XP.

Does this work across weapon classes?

Yes, when the attachment is compatible. A shared optic or muzzle earned on an Assault Rifle can also help with an LMG, SMG, Marksman Rifle, or another supported weapon. The system checks the attachment, not just whether both guns belong to the same class.

However, not every part transfers. A barrel or magazine built for one weapon may have no equivalent on another. Launchers and melee weapons have no normal Gunsmith attachments, so they do not benefit from the same attachment-based skips.

Will having 15 maxed weapons automatically skip 15 levels?

No. The number of maxed guns is not the number of free levels. What matters is which attachments you already own and which attachment rewards the next weapon would grant. Someone with five closely related guns finished could receive more relevant skips than someone with 15 very different guns.

There is no confirmed fixed skip count for every weapon or public attachment-by-attachment XP calculator. The best practical approach is to build a broad attachment collection and let the in-game Progression screen show which levels remain.

Attachments, Apex & Camos

Maxing a weapon is useful for more than reaching a number. Normal Weapon XP progression contributes to attachments, Apex Attachments, Military Camos, and access to later camo challenges.

Regular Gunsmith attachments

Weapon levels unlock options such as optics, muzzles, underbarrels, grips, stocks, and magazines. The exact attachment slots depend on the gun. Once compatible attachments are unlocked, other supported weapons can use them without starting that same unlock again.

Apex Attachments at max weapon level

Fully leveling a supported weapon unlocks its unique Apex Attachment. An Apex can change a gun's role or behavior rather than simply boost one stat. For instance, the Han 86 earns the Skybreaker, while the M4 earns the Hurricane conversion. Apex Attachments use a separate slot instead of one of your regular five attachment slots.

Launchers and the combat knife have no Apex Attachments. For the full list and how each one works, see our MW4 Apex Attachments guide.

Military, Special, and Completionist Camos

Each weapon has eight Military Camos unlocked at weapon-level milestones. Those milestones differ by gun, so a Level 38 pistol does not follow the same unlock levels as a Level 75 sniper rifle.

You also gain access to three Special Camo challenges per weapon as you level it. Completing a Special Camo unlocks it for the shared cosmetic pool. After all eight Military Camos and three Special Camos are finished for a weapon, its Completionist Camo challenges become available. Weapon Prestige is a separate path, not a requirement just to start Gold.

All 33 Weapons & Max Levels

Modern Warfare 4 has 33 launch weapons across nine classes: 24 primary guns and nine secondary or melee weapons. The table below lists the normal maximum weapon level for each, before you enter Weapon Prestige.

Launcher JOKR 46
Launcher PM-40 Anvil 46
Melee FSS Carbon Edge 1095 46

The KG-7 Vulcan reaches Level 75, the highest launch cap. The .50 GS stops at Level 37, the lowest. Other long grinds include the Signal 50 (74), MAR-9 (73), Han 86 (72), and M4 (72).

A higher cap does not automatically mean a proportionally longer grind. Weapon XP requirements, weapon performance, eligible Bonus Level Ups, and Double Weapon XP all affect how long a weapon actually takes. These caps come from the official MW4 launch weapon roster.

Weapon Prestige & Pyroclast

MW4 has one optional Weapon Prestige reset, followed by Weapon Prestige Master. You do not reset the gun a second time to enter Master. The system rewards four versions of the evolving Pyroclast camo.

Stage What You Do Reward
Normal leveling Weapon Level 1 to its normal maximum Unlock attachments and your Apex Attachment, where available
Enter Weapon Prestige 1 Reset the weapon to Level 1 Pyroclast
Finish Weapon Prestige 1 Level back to the weaponโ€™s normal maximum Pyroclast Terminus
Weapon Prestige Master Continue without a second reset; reach Master Level 150 Pyroclast Scatter
Finish Weapon Prestige Master Reach Master Level 250 Pyroclast Cascade

Weapon Prestige example: a gun with 70 normal levels

Your first journey is Level 1 to 70. Then you choose Weapon Prestige 1, return to Level 1, and immediately earn Pyroclast. Level it back to 70 for Pyroclast Terminus. You then enter Weapon Prestige Master automatically and continue to Level 150 for Scatter and Level 250 for Cascade. There is no second reset.

All Four Pyroclast Weapon Prestige Camos

Weapon Prestige has four camo rewards. The first unlocks after your only reset; the other three come from reaching their respective level milestones.

What resets when you Prestige a weapon?

  • Resets: the selected gun returns to Level 1, and its normal attachments relock.
  • Stays unlocked: Apex Attachments and eligible Weapon Blueprint attachments.
  • Cosmetics stay: Blueprints, camos, reticles, charms, decals, stickers, and other earned customization.
  • Other guns are safe: prestiging one gun does not relock Shared Attachments on your other weapons.
  • Master does not reset: after the Prestige 1 max level, leveling continues automatically toward 250.

Weapon Prestige is also different from Account Prestige and DMZ Operator Prestige. Prestiging the M4 does not reset your entire account or your DMZ Operators. You can check all four camo requirements in Activision's official progression guide.

Fastest Weapon XP Methods

The best Weapon XP method is the one that keeps you using your target gun in productive fights. No reliable launch-wide test proves one mode has the highest Weapon XP per minute for every player. Use these approaches as a starting point, then compare how much weapon progress you make per match.

1. Play active respawn modes

Hardpoint, Domination, and Kill Confirmed offer repeated fights without the downtime of round-based modes. Position yourself around contested objectives and use the gun you are leveling as often as possible. These are strong modes to test, rather than a guaranteed universal top-three ranking.

2. Prioritize maps that fit your weapon

SMGs and shotguns usually work best when you can reach close-range fights quickly. LMGs, Marksman Rifles, and Snipers may progress more consistently on maps with longer sightlines. More engagements are useful only if you can win enough of them to maintain steady progress.

3. Use Double Weapon XP, not just Double Player XP

Activate Double Weapon XP Tokens during sessions when you can play without long breaks. Player XP and Weapon XP are separate progress tracks, so make sure the token you are using boosts the one you want. Activision specifically recommends Double Weapon XP for Weapon Prestige leveling.

4. Build a shared attachment library first

Choose a versatile gun you enjoy and unlock attachments you expect to use on other weapons. Then move into weapons with overlapping compatible parts to take advantage of more Bonus Level Ups. This approach becomes especially valuable when working through multiple weapon classes or an entire arsenal.

5. Try DMZ when it suits your playstyle

DMZ and Multiplayer share Weapon Levels, so time spent using a gun in DMZ can contribute to your next Multiplayer loadout. DMZ also features AI and enemy Operators, missions, and extraction gameplay. Compare real weapon progress per hour with your Multiplayer results instead of assuming every AI kill has the same XP value as a player elimination.

6. Keep the target weapon equipped and track your progress

If you are trying to max one gun, avoid spending large portions of the session using other weapons. Record your starting and ending Weapon Level over two or three matches. Check whether shared attachments caused Bonus Level Ups, since these may make one gun's apparent leveling rate different from another's.

7. Combine Weapon XP with camo progress

Check the next Military Camo level and Special Camo challenge before entering a match. Whenever possible, work toward camo tasks while earning Weapon XP. This reduces the chance that you need to return to a maxed weapon later just to finish challenges you could have progressed during leveling.

MW4 vs Previous COD Games

MW4 did not invent shared attachments. Earlier Call of Duty games already let players carry some unlocks between guns. The main difference is that MW4 also gives a Bonus Level Up when an attachment reward would be duplicated.

Game How Weapon Progression Worked
Modern Warfare II (2022) Weapon Platforms shared some platform attachments; universal attachments worked across compatible guns.
Modern Warfare III (2023) Expanded shared attachments and introduced Aftermarket Parts, but not MW4-style Bonus Level Ups.
Black Ops 6 (2024) Most optics were shared within a weapon class; other attachment categories were mainly weapon-specific.
Black Ops 7 (2025) Weapon Prestige included two optional weapon-level resets before Weapon Prestige Master.
Modern Warfare 4 (2026) Compatible attachments unlock once, duplicate rewards can skip levels, and Weapon Prestige needs only one reset.

In short, MW4 makes later weapons easier to level while keeping an individual Weapon Level for each gun. Its Prestige path is also shorter in reset count than Black Ops 7, though reaching Weapon Prestige Master 250 still requires a large amount of Weapon XP.

If you played BO7, the important difference is simple: two Weapon Prestige resets there, one Weapon Prestige reset in MW4. BO7's two-reset system is described in Activision's BO7 progression guide.

Weapon Leveling FAQ

Do all guns share the same Weapon Level?

No. Every weapon has its own level. Only compatible attachment unlocks carry between weapons and may trigger Bonus Level Ups.

Can maxing Assault Rifles help me level an LMG?

Yes, if the LMG uses attachments you already earned. Sharing is based on attachment compatibility, not on staying in the same weapon class.

Do MW4 weapon levels carry over from DMZ to Multiplayer?

Yes. They use the same weapon progression, even though DMZ also has its own separate Player Level track.

What is the maximum Weapon Level in MW4?

It varies by gun. The launch caps run from Level 37 on the .50 GS to Level 75 on the KG-7 Vulcan. Weapon Prestige Master continues to Level 250.

Do I need max Weapon Level for Gold camo?

You need to complete that weapon's Military and Special Camo requirements and then the Gold challenge. Some Special challenges unlock at its maximum Weapon Level, but Weapon Prestige is not required.

How many Weapon Prestiges are there in MW4?

There is one optional Weapon Prestige reset, followed automatically by Weapon Prestige Master. It ends at Master Level 250 with Pyroclast Cascade.

What happens to my attachments when I Prestige a weapon?

The selected gun's normal attachments relock. Apex Attachments, eligible Blueprint attachments, and earned customization are retained. Your other weapons' Shared Attachments are not relocked.

Does Double Player XP help with Weapon Prestige?

Use Double Weapon XP Tokens for Weapon XP and Weapon Prestige. Double Player XP targets a different progression track.

How many Bonus Level Ups do I get for 15 completed guns?

There is no fixed number. Skips depend on the exact attachments you previously unlocked and which rewards are compatible with the new gun.

Is Weapon Prestige required for multiplayer or DMZ completionist camos?

No. Weapon Prestige is the separate Pyroclast reward track. Standard and mode-specific Completionist Camos have their own challenge requirements.

Bottom line: Every MW4 gun has its own Weapon Level, but the grind becomes more efficient as you collect shared attachments. Max a weapon for its normal unlocks and Apex Attachment, then choose whether to go through one Prestige reset and finish the Pyroclast journey at Weapon Prestige Master Level 250.
