Coming back to Heroes of the Storm after years away can be confusing. Xal’atath is finally here, but she is not the only thing that changed while you were gone. Unranked is gone, Haunted Mines is back, new Mythic Rewards exist, and several familiar Heroes play differently. Here is everything you need to know before jumping back into the Nexus.
Is Heroes of the Storm Active Again in 2026?
Heroes of the Storm is receiving meaningful development again. Blizzard itself says the game had essentially entered maintenance mode in 2022, but that was not the end of its development story.
The team first focused on technical improvements and bug fixes. Balance updates became more frequent in 2024, followed by larger Hero changes, new cosmetics, battleground updates, Mythic Rewards, returning maps, and finally a completely new Hero.
Patch 57 released on September 28, 2026 with Xal’atath as Hero 91. She is the first new HOTS Hero in almost six years.
Blizzard is still being careful about what comes next. There is no promise of returning to the old release schedule, but another possible Hero is already being worked on.
You can read Blizzard's explanation of its current approach in the
official Xal’atath launch announcement. We also covered the wider comeback in our
Heroes of the Storm BlizzCon 2026 guide.
The 30-Second HOTS Catch-Up
If Hogger was still the newest Hero when you stopped playing, you do not need to read six years of patch notes. These are the changes that matter most when you log back in.

The good news is that HOTS has not turned into a different game. Your old fundamentals still matter. The main job is learning which parts of your old knowledge are now outdated.
Xal’atath Is the First New Hero in Almost Six Years
Xal’atath is probably the reason you are reading this guide in the first place.
She released on September 28, 2026 as the
91st Hero in Heroes of the Storm. The previous new Hero was Hogger, making this the first addition to the roster in almost six years.
Xal’atath is a Ranged Assassin built around Basic Attacks, Void damage, positioning, and her Dark Heart. Her current live abilities are:
- Trait: Void Volley - Basic Attacks charge a barrage of Void Orbs.
- Q: Shadow Mark - Fires a Void Orb that can mark enemy Heroes and Structures.
- W: Dark Heart Ritual - Summons the Dark Heart to damage nearby enemies and chase marked targets.
- E: Void Step - Teleports Xal’atath through a triangular movement pattern.
- Heroics: Void Eruption and Void Convergence.
Xal’atath is available as a standalone purchase for
$7.99. Blizzard currently aims to make her available for Gold around the end of November, although that timing is still tentative.
For her complete kit, talents, and gameplay details, see our
Xal’atath Heroes of the Storm guide.
Game Modes Have Changed
Most of the familiar ways to play HOTS are still here, but one important queue disappeared while you were away.
Unranked Draft Is Gone
Blizzard removed Unranked Mode in April 2026.
If you previously used Unranked to practice drafting without risking Rank Points, there is no direct replacement. Returning players now mainly choose between Quick Match, ARAM, and Storm League.
Quick Match
Quick Match still lets you choose your Hero before matchmaking. It is probably the easiest place to test an old main after a long break.
Use your first few matches to check ability changes, rebuild muscle memory, and get comfortable with objective timings again.
ARAM
ARAM remains one of the fastest ways to remember how the roster works.
You spend most of the match fighting and will quickly run into Heroes, abilities, and interactions you may have forgotten. It is excellent for mechanics, but it will not teach you normal map rotations or macro.
Storm League
Storm League remains the main competitive Ranked mode.
Drafting, team composition, soaking, rotations, and map knowledge still matter. The main risk for a returning player is assuming that every old Hero build or battleground interaction still works exactly as you remember it.

Battlegrounds Have Changed Too
Map knowledge has always been a major part of HOTS, so returning battlegrounds and objective changes are worth learning before you go straight into Ranked.
Haunted Mines Is Back
Haunted Mines returned to Quick Match in April 2026 and was added to Ranked in July.
The objective has changed from the version many returning players remember. It now ends when one team collects
55 Skulls instead of waiting for all 100 Skulls to be collected. Hero vision is also reduced while inside the Mines.
The Mine Golem and its scaling have received additional adjustments as Blizzard continues tuning the map.
Garden of Terror Classic Returned
The original Garden of Terror is playable again under the name
Garden of Terror Classic.
There is an important difference: the Classic version is currently available through Custom Games. It is separate from the modern Garden of Terror used elsewhere in the game.
Warhead Junction Works Differently
Warheads now take longer to channel, and taking damage interrupts the launch.
Their damage against Forts and Keeps was also increased. Blizzard later reduced the extra channel penalty after an interrupted launch from 10 seconds to 5 seconds.
The easiest rule for a returning player is simple: do not rely completely on your old map timings. Watch the objective tooltips during your first few matches back.
Blizzard's
April 2026 patch notes contain the main returning-map and mode changes.
What Are Mythic Rewards?
Mythic Rewards are one of the biggest systems that will look completely new if you have been away for several years.
They are difficult final milestones added to certain Hero quests. Reaching one can unlock an unusually powerful effect, but the requirements are intentionally high enough that you should not expect to complete them every game.
Some good examples are:
- Muradin: his Storm Bolt quest can eventually gain 50% more range, 100% more width, and pierce all targets.
- Murky: completing his extended Pufferfish quest gives him 50% more Health and even increases his physical size.
- Ragnaros: hitting eight enemy Heroes with the center of Sulfuras Smash gives the Heroic an extra charge.
- Tyrande: her Lunar Flare quest can eventually make Basic Attacks occasionally trigger another Lunar Flare.
- Xal’atath: reaching 100 Void Volley stacks increases her Basic Attack and Void Volley damage while making the projectiles pierce.
Blizzard originally called these Pinnacle Rewards before renaming them
Mythic Rewards in February 2026.
Another useful change came with the same system: quests that lose stacks on death can no longer drop you below a milestone you already completed.
Hero Reworks You May Have Missed
Do not worry, you do not need to relearn all 91 Heroes.
Most Heroes still keep the same identity and basic playstyle. However, several received much larger changes than the normal damage and cooldown adjustments.
Arthas Was Fully Reworked
Arthas received a full rework in the April 2026 patch.
His familiar Death Coil, Howling Blast, Frozen Tempest, and Frostmourne abilities are still recognizable, but his quests, talents, Heroics, and scaling changed enough that an old Arthas player should read through the kit again.
Muradin Has a New Storm Bolt Quest
The old Perfect Storm baseline quest is gone.
Muradin now gains quest stacks by Basic Attacking Heroes affected by Slows or Stuns. The later milestones change Storm Bolt significantly, including its piercing behavior.
Murky Received Major Baseline Changes
Murky now gains a Shield after reviving, his Egg works differently, Slime can affect Structures, and Pufferfish received a completely new quest.
Several talents were also removed or replaced, including changes to his old Level 20 options.
Abathur's Locusts Changed
Abathur's Locusts no longer simply exist for a fixed duration.
They now lose Health over time, heal from the damage they deal and nearby Minion deaths, and deal bonus damage to non-Heroes. If you used Abathur mainly for lane pressure, this is worth relearning.
Ragnaros' Molten Core Changed Significantly
Molten Core received changes to its cooldown, Health, duration, ability range, damage, and ability behavior.
Sulfuras Smash also received its new Mythic Quest, giving experienced Ragnaros players another mechanic to chase.
Gameplay Changes You Will Notice During Your First Match
Not every change is as obvious as a new Hero or returning battleground. Several smaller systems now affect normal matches too.
Respawn Timers Are Shorter
Mid and late-game respawn timers were reduced in April 2026.
By Level 22, the respawn timer returns to
65 seconds instead of continuing to climb. You will spend a little less time watching your team fight without you after a late-game death.
Summoned Units Work Differently
Many summoned units now lose Health every second instead of simply disappearing when a fixed duration ends.
Structures also prioritize summoned units when there are no Minions left, and summoned units no longer receive their old reduced Structure damage treatment.
This matters most if you play Heroes such as Abathur, Nazeebo, Gazlowe, or other summon-heavy characters.
Quest Progress Is More Forgiving
Quests that can lose stacks no longer fall below milestones you have already completed.
That becomes especially important with some of the newer long-form quests and Mythic Rewards.
Small Quality-of-Life Changes Have Arrived Too
HOTS has received a lot of smaller polish updates while you were away.
XP Globe feedback was improved, Structure attack beams are easier to see, the home screen and startup music have changed several times, and Patch 57 added the ability to ping your Healing Fountain cooldown.
What Has NOT Changed
This is still Heroes of the Storm.
If you understood the game before, most of the fundamentals that made you a good player are still useful.
- Experience is shared. Soaking lanes and staying ahead on levels still wins games.
- There is no traditional item shop. Your Hero still develops through talent tiers.
- Every battleground has its own objective. Knowing when to rotate remains essential.
- Team fights matter more than individual lane dominance. HOTS is still heavily built around coordinated team play.
- Talent advantages matter. Fighting 9 vs. 10 or 15 vs. 16 is still usually a bad idea.
- Quick Match remains Hero-first matchmaking. Pick your Hero and queue.
- Storm League remains the main Ranked mode.
Your old instincts around soaking, camps, rotations, objective timing, and talent advantages should return quickly.
The part you should distrust is your memory of exact talents, Hero mechanics, and certain battleground interactions.
Which Heroes Should Returning Players Start With?
Your old main is usually the best Hero for your first game back, as long as you check whether the kit changed first.
Muscle memory makes returning much easier than trying to learn a completely new Hero at the same time.
If you want something simple while getting comfortable again, these are straightforward starting points:
- Raynor: simple ranged damage, safe positioning, and an easy kit to understand.
- Johanna: durable Tank with clear defensive tools and reliable crowd control.
- Li Li: accessible healing that lets you focus more on positioning and the match around you.
- Jaina: familiar Mage gameplay with clear ability combos and burst damage.
This is not a 2026 tier list. These Heroes simply let you spend more attention on relearning HOTS instead of fighting a complicated kit.
Heroes such as Medivh, The Lost Vikings, Genji, Maiev, and Zeratul are better saved until your mechanics and map awareness feel normal again.
Your First Five Games Back
You do not need 50 practice matches before touching Storm League again. A simple five-game return plan is enough for most experienced players.
- Game 1: Open Try Mode first, check your settings, and read your old main's current abilities and talents. Then play that Hero in Quick Match.
- Game 2: Stay on something familiar and focus on soaking, rotations, camps, and objective timing.
- Game 3: Play ARAM to refresh your memory of Heroes and abilities you have not seen for years.
- Game 4: Play a changed Hero or pay extra attention to one of the updated battlegrounds.
- Game 5: If HOTS feels natural again, move into Storm League. If not, play a few more Quick Matches first.
The goal is not to relearn every patch note. It is to rebuild the habits that made HOTS feel natural before your break.

What Is Coming Next for HOTS?
Xal’atath is not necessarily the end of the current HOTS revival.
Blizzard says another possible Hero is already being worked on, but the team is deliberately avoiding promises it may not be able to keep.
The current plan is to release
one or two smaller balance patches over the next few months. Blizzard will then look at how things are going before deciding on potential release plans for Hero 92.
There is no confirmed Hero 92 identity, release date, or regular new-Hero schedule yet.
That is an important distinction. HOTS clearly has more active development than it did during the maintenance period, but Blizzard is trying to build that development around a sustainable pace rather than immediately returning to the old content cycle.
Heroes of the Storm Returning Player FAQ
Is Heroes of the Storm still active in 2026?
Yes. HOTS remains playable and is receiving balance patches, battleground updates, Hero changes, cosmetics, and new content.
Patch 57 introduced Xal’atath, the game's first new Hero in almost six years.
Is Heroes of the Storm out of maintenance mode?
Blizzard says HOTS had essentially entered maintenance mode in 2022 and now describes the current period as a new era for the game.
However, the team has not promised a fixed patch or Hero release schedule. The focus is currently on sustainable development.
Who is the newest Hero in Heroes of the Storm?
Xal’atath is the newest HOTS Hero. She released on September 28, 2026 as Hero 91.
Who was the last Hero before Xal’atath?
Hogger was the previous new Hero, released in December 2020.
That created a gap of almost six years between new Hero releases.
Is Unranked still in HOTS?
No. Blizzard removed Unranked Mode in April 2026.
Quick Match, ARAM, and Storm League remain the main PvP options.
Is Haunted Mines back in Heroes of the Storm?

It is the restored original version and exists separately from the modern Garden of Terror.
What are Mythic Rewards?
Mythic Rewards are powerful final milestones attached to certain Hero quests.
They usually have difficult requirements and are intended to create rare, memorable power spikes rather than something you complete in every match.
Do my old HOTS builds still work?
Some will, but you should check your Hero before using an old build.
Several Heroes received new quests, moved talents, removed talents, or larger mechanical changes while you were away.
Is Blizzard making another new HOTS Hero?
Blizzard says another possible Hero is already being worked on.
The team has not revealed Hero 92 or confirmed when, or if, that Hero will release.
