The Ranged Assassin arrived with Patch 57 on September 28, 2026, using Shadow Mark, the Dark Heart, Void Step, and Void Volley to control space and become more dangerous during longer fights. Xal'atath originally entered the PTR on September 14, giving Blizzard two weeks to collect feedback and adjust her before release. Several parts of her kit changed during testing, so launch-day information should be used instead of the original BlizzCon demo values.
She becomes more dangerous when a fight lasts long enough for her to keep landing Basic Attacks, charge Void Volley, build quest stacks, and repeatedly pressure important areas. Objectives, narrow entrances, and fights where the enemy team must hold a position suit her kit well.
Her tradeoff is survivability. Xal'atath needs good positioning because much of her damage requires her to stay active in a fight rather than casting one combo and immediately leaving.
A center hit marks the target for 4 seconds. Marked targets are Revealed and attract the Dark Heart and Void Minions, making this the main setup ability for the rest of her kit.
Landing the center matters much more than simply touching an enemy with the outer part of the projectile. Try to aim it at targets already slowed, stunned, rooted, or forced to move through a narrow path.
The Dark Heart moves toward Shadow Mark's impact location. If a marked target is available, it pursues that target and detonates on contact for a much larger burst.
This means Xal'atath can use the Heart in two different ways. Leave it active to control an area, or use Shadow Mark to convert it into direct pressure against a priority target.
Each teleport increases her Basic Attack damage while the ability is active, up to a total bonus after completing all three jumps. You can reactivate Void Step early to stop at your current position rather than completing the entire path.
Do not treat Void Step as a guaranteed escape. Check the triangle before committing so you know where each jump can leave you.
The unique interaction is with the Dark Heart. Casting Void Eruption on the Heart causes an immediate fully empowered eruption, letting you trade the normal charge-up for a fast burst in the area you already control.
The minions are attracted to enemies affected by Shadow Mark. This makes Void Convergence better suited to sustained pressure, objective fights, and situations where the enemy cannot easily abandon the area.
Hitting enemy Heroes with Void Volley builds permanent quest progress for that match. Dying removes stacks, but once you reach a major reward threshold you cannot fall below that milestone.
Each successful Hero hit also increases Void Volley's damage, so repeated accurate volleys matter throughout the match.
The practical lesson is simple: keep attacking safely, but do not die just to finish a charge. Reaching each quest milestone makes future deaths less punishing.
Because Xal'atath has only just reached the live servers, it is too early to treat one talent setup as the proven best build for every matchup. Her win rates, talent pick rates, and possible balance changes need time to settle.

How to Play Xal'atath
Xal'atath works best when you plan a fight before trying to maximize damage. She wants enemies to fight around the Dark Heart while she keeps attacking safely enough to charge Void Volley.- Keep Basic Attacks active: You need them to build Soul Essence and charge Void Volley. Attack whenever you can do so without stepping beyond your frontline.
- Place the Dark Heart with W: Put it where the enemy wants to stand, such as an objective, choke point, entrance, or retreat path.
- Land the center of Shadow Mark: The mark is what connects several parts of Xal'atath's kit. Allied crowd control makes Q much easier to land.
- Use W into Q for pressure: Once the Dark Heart is active, Shadow Mark can pull it toward the marked target and trigger its detonation.
- Use Void Step carefully: E gives mobility and Basic Attack pressure, but the triangular path can also move you into danger.
- Protect your Void Volley stacks: Death removes quest progress. Reaching 20, 60, and 100 stacks creates safer checkpoints.
