Xal'atath PTR Date and Release Date

The PTR is a separate test version of HOTS. Her September 14 arrival there does not make her available in your normal live matches. The announcement gives release dates, but does not specify an exact unlock hour.

Who Is Xal'atath in Heroes of the Storm?

Xal'atath is a Void-aligned character from World of Warcraft and a major villain in Midnight. In Heroes of the Storm, she joins the roster as a Ranged Assassin whose abilities revolve around the Dark Heart, a talisman she places on the battlefield.

Trait: Void Volley

Basic attacks generate Soul Essence. Once it is full, Xal'atath can release a barrage at a target area while continuing to move.

The Void Whispers quest strengthens her Void damage as she lands volleys on enemy Heroes. The demo milestones are:

• 30 stacks: 2 extra range.
• 55 stacks: One fewer attack needed to charge.
• 90 stacks: 50% more Void damage and piercing projectiles.

Use safe openings to build Soul Essence, then aim the volley where your team has already trapped or slowed opponents. Staying alive gives you more chances to keep the quest moving.

Q: Shadow Mark

Shadow Mark sends out a large Void Orb. Heroes caught in its inner radius receive a mark, and the Dark Heart moves to the impact point to detonate on marked targets. The demo mark lasts 4 seconds and reveals its target.

Aim to land the center of the orb. Catching someone with its edge does not apply the mark described in her kit, so an edge hit can miss the setup you need for the Dark Heart.

W: Void Step

Void Step lets Xal'atath blink between three points in a triangle, gaining attack damage at each stop. She can end the sequence early, giving her a choice over where she finishes the movement.

Check the destination points before committing. Ending the sequence in a safe position can be more useful than following the full path into enemy crowd control.

E: Dark Heart Ritual

Dark Heart Ritual summons the talisman, which pulses damage around itself. It can then follow and explode on a hero affected by Shadow Mark, connecting her E and Q into the same setup.

Heroic: Void Eruption

Xal'atath channels a growing orb, launches it to blind enemies, and detonates it over a large area. Blizzard's reveal description also says casting it on the Dark Heart produces an immediate, fully empowered eruption.

Heroic: Void Convergence

Void Convergence creates a portal that sends out Void minions. Fallen minions are replaced while the portal remains active, until its duration ends or enemies destroy it. Shadow Mark helps direct its minions toward your target.

Talent tooltips are now available from the BlizzCon demo. These four options are useful starting points for testing different playstyles. They are not a complete build or a ranked recommendation.
When comparing talents, keep the rest of your choices steady for a few matches. That makes it easier to judge whether a change helps you survive, land your setup, or stay active during an objective fight.

These are early gameplay pointers based on the reveal and demo kit. Public PTR testing is still needed to judge her strongest talents, reliable combos, and matchups.

Start by thinking about the space your team wants to hold. An objective entrance or a narrow approach gives you a clear place to practise using the Dark Heart. Watch whether enemies stay nearby, move around it, or force your team to retreat before committing more abilities.

• Practise E, then Q: Place the Dark Heart with E, then aim Shadow Mark with Q at an enemy hero. Watch how the talisman responds so you can learn its timing.
• Keep basic attacks in your routine: Build Soul Essence when it is safe to attack. Avoid stepping past your frontline just to finish charging it.
• Choose your stopping point: Before using Void Step, check where its path takes you and where you could end it early.
• Test both Heroics: Compare the immediate impact of an empowered Void Eruption with the pressure from a protected Void Convergence portal.

Strengths, Weaknesses, and Early Counterplay

Blizzard's BlizzCon presentation highlights her damage, control over an area, and threat in longer fights. It also lists low survivability and vulnerability to mobile or stealth heroes among her weaknesses.

For your first matches, focus on positioning and timing before damage totals. Stay close enough to your frontline to attack safely, and use your team's crowd control to help land Shadow Mark. Avoid chasing a mobile target so far that you lose your team's protection.

When facing Xal'atath, the practical response is to make her fight away from the area she has prepared. Watch her Void Step endpoint, avoid grouping around the Dark Heart, and pressure her when her team cannot protect her. These are starting ideas based on the revealed kit, not a tested counter tier list.

How to Play Xal'atath on the PTR

Xal'atath becomes available for PTR testing on September 14, 2026. Use the separate test client through the Battle.net desktop app:

1. Open Battle.net and select Heroes of the Storm.
2. Open the version or Region/Account dropdown above the Play button.
3. Select PTR: Heroes of the Storm.
4. Click Install, or update the PTR if you already have it.
5. Launch the test client once the Xal'atath update is available.

Blizzard's PTR access guidance says you need to install the live game and log in at least once. If the test version does not appear, complete that step, close the game, and check the dropdown again.

PTR progress does not carry over to live. Treat your time there as practice, since levels, Gold, and progression rewards earned during testing do not become live-account progress. Her balance and talents may also change before release.
