Heroes of the Storm is officially returning to BlizzCon in 2026, but fans want to know whether this is simply a celebration of the game's history or the beginning of something bigger. Blizzard has confirmed a major Legacy Match, HOTS rewards, playable Heroes of the Storm at the Blizzard Arcade, and more attention for the game than we have seen in years.

Here is everything confirmed for Heroes of the Storm at BlizzCon 2026, plus what could realistically be announced.

Heroes of the Storm Is Officially Returning to BlizzCon

Heroes of the Storm will return to the BlizzCon stage on September 12, 2026. The headline event is a Legacy Match between Dignitas and Gen.G, built around their famous meeting in the 2018 HGC Finals.

Blizzard is also bringing Heroes of the Storm to the Blizzard Arcade, where attendees will be able to play it alongside other classic Blizzard games.

Heroes of the Storm Legacy Match: Dignitas vs. Gen.G

Blizzard is not bringing HOTS back with a random exhibition match. The company is recreating one of the biggest rivalries from the final years of Heroes esports.

The match pays tribute to the 2018 Heroes of the Storm Global Championship Finals, the last time HOTS appeared at BlizzCon. Gen.G defeated Dignitas in that final to become HGC champions.

Blizzard says all five Dignitas players have previously competed at BlizzCon and that four were members of the 2018 team.

Kyocha returns from the Gen.G squad that won the 2018 HGC Finals, while the rest of the lineup is made up of Korean players with previous BlizzCon experience.


The Heroes match is part of the wider Blizzard Classic Cup. The competition features classic Blizzard games and has a total prize pool of $100,000. Each Legacy Match also carries a $20,000 winner's bounty.

Heroes of the Storm only has a Legacy Match rather than an additional Entertainment Match, making Dignitas vs. Gen.G the main HOTS competition of the weekend.

When Is the Heroes of the Storm BlizzCon 2026 Match?

The Heroes of the Storm Legacy Match takes place on Saturday, September 12 on the Classic Cup Stage in Hall A.

• 12:00 PM to 2:15 PM PDT
• 3:00 PM to 5:15 PM EDT
• 9:00 PM to 11:15 PM CEST

The match will also be available through the official BlizzCon livestreams, so you do not need a BlizzCon ticket to watch it.

There is an extra reason to use Twitch. Watching one hour of the Classic Cup in the Heroes of the Storm Twitch category on September 12 unlocks a 7-Day Boost for HOTS.

Heroes of the Storm Has Been Getting More Updates in 2026

The Legacy Match would already be interesting on its own. What makes BlizzCon 2026 more unusual is what Blizzard has been doing with Heroes of the Storm during the months leading into the event.

Back in 2022, Blizzard said HOTS would move into a support model similar to StarCraft and StarCraft II. Future patches were expected to focus mainly on sustainability, bug fixes, and occasional balance changes.

The 2026 patches have gone further than that basic description.

• A new Toon'Dan Gul'Dan skin arrived in February.
• Large balance and gameplay changes were made across multiple heroes.
• Arthas received a full rework.
• The original Garden of Terror returned as Garden of Terror Classic.
• Haunted Mines returned to Quick Match.

None of this confirms a full HOTS revival. However, it does show Blizzard actively making gameplay, content, map, cosmetic, and system changes to a game that had previously entered long-term maintenance.

That is one reason the timing of its BlizzCon return has attracted so much attention.

Two BlizzCon Panels HOTS Players Should Watch

There is currently no panel called "Heroes of the Storm: What's Next." That is an important reason to keep expectations under control.

However, two panels take place on the same Classic Cup Stage shortly after the HOTS Legacy Match.

Custodians of Legacy Games

The Custodians of Legacy Games panel begins at 2:30 PM PDT, only 15 minutes after the scheduled end of the HOTS match.

Blizzard describes the session as a chance to meet developers and community figures who preserve, support, and celebrate its legacy games for new generations.

Heroes of the Storm clearly fits within that wider group, but Blizzard has not said that a HOTS announcement will happen during the panel.

Classic Game Deep Dive

At 3:30 PM PDT, the Classic Cup Stage moves into a Classic Game Deep Dive.

Blizzard describes it as a closer look at the content and design ideas shaping a classic Blizzard game. The description does not identify which game it covers, so HOTS fans should watch it without assuming the subject will be Heroes of the Storm.

The Opening Ceremony at 10:30 AM PDT is also important. Blizzard has specifically positioned the Opening Ceremony as the home for major BlizzCon announcements.

Could Heroes of the Storm Actually Be Coming Back?

This is the big question going into BlizzCon 2026.

There are several real reasons for HOTS players to be more interested in this BlizzCon than they have been for years.

• Heroes of the Storm is returning to an official BlizzCon stage.
• The Legacy Match has a large two-hour-plus schedule block.
• Blizzard brought back a major rivalry from the HGC era.

• Blizzard is giving HOTS players both a free BlizzCon reward and a Twitch Drop.
• BlizzCon includes programming specifically focused on Blizzard's legacy games.

There has also been outside speculation about renewed Heroes of the Storm development. That is still speculation, not an announcement.

Reasons to Keep Expectations Under Control

• There is no dedicated HOTS "What's Next" panel.
• Blizzard has not announced a new hero.
• No new battleground has been revealed.
• There is no public HOTS roadmap.
• HGC has not been revived.
• Blizzard has not officially reversed its 2022 long-term support statement.

The safest conclusion before BlizzCon is that Blizzard is showing more interest in Heroes of the Storm, but we do not yet know how far that interest goes.

What Could Blizzard Announce for Heroes of the Storm?

If Blizzard does have something planned, not every possibility is equally realistic.


A larger balance patch, more restored content, cosmetics, or a more regular update cadence would fit the direction Blizzard has already taken in 2026.

A new hero, new battleground, or full competitive relaunch would represent a much larger change and should not be expected unless Blizzard explicitly announces it.

Even players who do not watch the Legacy Match can already claim a free HOTS reward.

Blizzard is giving players the Fix It Gear Head Thrall skin through the Battle.net Shop as part of its BlizzCon 2026 celebration.

There is also a separate reward for watching the Classic Cup.

Players who watch one hour of the Heroes of the Storm Classic Cup on Twitch on September 12 can earn a 7-Day Boost.


To qualify, link your Twitch account to your Battle.net account before watching and make sure you are watching an eligible stream in the Heroes of the Storm category.

The HOTS Boost reward is listed as Twitch only, so watching on YouTube does not count toward this particular Drop.

BlizzCon 2026 should finally tell us how much Blizzard's recent HOTS activity actually means.
