Sombra has been completely rebuilt in Overwatch Season 5. She is no longer a Damage hero, Hack and Virus are gone from her normal kit, and players now need to learn how to heal, weaken enemies, and create value without abandoning her stealth identity.
This guide explains every Sombra rework change, how Hotfix and Cyberspace work, the best early perk choices, practical teamfight rotations, and how to play the new Support Sombra effectively.

Sombra Rework Quick Summary
The October 6, 2026 rework changes Sombra from a Damage hero into a
Support Tactician. Blizzard kept her Machine Pistol, Translocator, Stealth, and EMP, but replaced most of the kit that previously defined her offensive playstyle.
Hack is no longer a normal enemy-targeting ability. Virus is also gone. In their place, Sombra gets
Hotfix for ally healing and
Cyberspace for area healing, damage, and the new Weaken debuff.

All Sombra Rework Changes Explained
Sombra Is Now a Support Hero
Sombra has moved from Damage to Support and from the Recon subrole to
Tactician. This changes her main responsibility. You are no longer trying to spend most of the match isolated behind the enemy team looking for solo kills.
The current Tactician passive also makes Sombra count as an additional ally when progressing an objective. That gives her another reason to stay involved with the team instead of permanently living in the enemy backline.
Machine Pistol Changes
Her Machine Pistol still works as her primary weapon, but its raw damage per projectile has dropped from
8 to 7. In exchange, the gun has better effective range and accuracy.
- Damage reduced from 8 to 7 per projectile
- Minimum falloff distance increased from 15 to 20 meters
- Maximum spread reduced from 2.3 to 2 degrees
- Shots before reaching maximum spread increased from 6 to 10
This fits the new role. Sombra has less burst pressure, but her gun is more reliable when she is supporting a fight from a side angle instead of committing to a point-blank assassination.
Hack Has Been Removed
The biggest mechanical change is the removal of regular enemy Hack. Sombra can no longer repeatedly silence enemy abilities with her standard kit.
Blizzard replaced that disruption with
Weaken, a new status effect tied to Cyberspace. EMP still retains Sombra's ability-hacking identity, so Hack has not disappeared from her ultimate.
Virus Has Been Removed
Virus is completely gone. Its single-target damage role is replaced by Cyberspace, which can affect both teams at the same time.
That is a major change for old Sombra players. Instead of Hack into Virus into Machine Pistol, your main ability usage now revolves around placing Cyberspace where teammates and enemies overlap.
Translocator and Stealth Changes
Translocator remains Sombra's main mobility and escape tool, but it is less forgiving as a long-distance exit.
- Stealth duration increased from 5 to 6.5 seconds
- Time to enter Stealth increased from 0.3 to 0.75 seconds
- Translocator range reduced from 18 to 12.25 meters
- Movement speed bonus now starts immediately after teleporting
- Cooldown increased from 6 to 7.5 seconds
The longer Stealth duration gives you more time to set up, but the shorter throw range and longer cooldown make bad Translocator usage easier to punish.
EMP Changes
EMP still provides the classic large-area disruption, but Blizzard has significantly reduced how often Sombra can access it.
Its ultimate cost increased by
67.5%, while its damage dropped from 25% to
20% of each enemy's current health. EMP can still Hack enemies, which now makes it Sombra's main way to access her old ability-locking effect.
How Does Sombra's Hotfix Work?
Hotfix is Sombra's new direct healing ability and is assigned to Secondary Fire by default. It lets her place a healing effect on an ally from up to
17 meters away.
Hotfix immediately restores
65 health, then continues healing for
25 health per second. The effect remains until it has provided 175 total healing or 12 seconds have passed.
- 65 instant healing
- 25 healing per second
- Up to 175 total healing
- Maximum duration of 12 seconds
- 0.5-second cast time
- 17-meter range
- 2 charges
- 8-second cooldown
The important part is that Hotfix can be placed
before an ally takes heavy damage. For example, putting Hotfix on Winston or Genji before they commit gives them healing already waiting as the engagement starts.
Hotfix can even be cast while Sombra is Stealthed. Doing so temporarily reveals her, but does not end Stealth. This lets Sombra support a teammate while moving into her next position.
Hotfix also keeps part of Sombra's old hacking utility. You can target health packs and most enemy deployables without consuming a Hotfix charge. This uses a separate 6-second cooldown, while hacked health packs now remain hacked for 30 seconds.
Taking damage while hacking a health pack or deployable interrupts the attempt, so do not stand exposed while trying to disable utility in the middle of a fight.
How Do Cyberspace and Weaken Work?
Cyberspace replaces Virus and is arguably the most important ability in the new kit. Sombra launches a projectile that explodes on impact and creates a
5-meter zone for 3 seconds.
The initial explosion deals
40 damage to enemies and
40 healing to allies. While the zone remains active, it deals 25 damage per second to enemies and heals allies for 30 health per second.
More importantly, every enemy standing inside Cyberspace becomes
Weakened.
| Cyberspace Effect |

| Initial enemy damage |
40 |
| Initial ally healing |
40 |
| Damage per second |
25 |
| Healing per second |
30 |
| Duration |
3 seconds |
| Radius |
5 meters |
| Weaken |
Enemy damage and healing output reduced by 50% |
Weaken is what turns Cyberspace from a basic healing zone into a fight-winning utility ability. An enemy inside it deals
50% less damage and 50% less healing.
That means placement matters more than simply landing the projectile for its initial damage. Throwing Cyberspace where your tank is fighting an enemy tank, or where multiple heroes are grouped around an objective, can heal your team while cutting the enemy team's output at the same time.
Do not automatically throw Cyberspace at the first enemy you see. Save it for the part of the fight where reducing enemy damage or healing will actually change the outcome.
Sombra's Conspirator Passive Explained
Opportunist has been removed and replaced by
Conspirator. The new passive reveals enemies whose ultimates are fully charged.
This gives Sombra information that the rest of the team normally does not have. A good Sombra player should use that knowledge to warn teammates about likely ultimates and decide when EMP, Cyberspace, or defensive positioning will be most valuable.
For example, knowing an enemy is holding a fight-winning ultimate lets your team spread out, save defensive abilities, or force that player into a bad position before committing.
This information advantage is easy to underestimate. New Sombra is designed around controlling fights through information and timing rather than simply dealing more damage.
Best Sombra Perks After the Rework
Sombra's perk choices have also changed. Because the rework has only just gone live, these are our
early recommendations, not a claim that the competitive meta is already solved.
Minor Perks: Life Hack vs CTRL ALT ESC
Life Hack makes EMP apply Hotfix to all nearby allies. This gives EMP an additional Support function and can create a huge health swing when both teams commit at the same time.
CTRL ALT ESC causes Translocator to start passive health regeneration when Sombra teleports while below half health. It is the safer choice when you are repeatedly taking side angles and need more self-sustain.
Early recommendation: Life Hack should be the stronger teamfight option in most coordinated games. CTRL ALT ESC is valuable when you are being heavily pressured or playing a more independent style.
Major Perks: Cybersecurity vs Data Packet
Cybersecurity doubles Cyberspace's healing on allies below half health. That directly strengthens Sombra's most important teamfight ability and makes low-health allies much harder to finish while they remain inside the zone.
Data Packet reduces Hotfix's main cooldown by 4 seconds whenever Sombra hacks a health pack. Its value depends more heavily on the map, nearby health pack locations, and whether you can safely build health pack hacks into your rotation.
Early recommendation: Cybersecurity looks like the safer default choice because it works directly inside fights. Data Packet becomes more interesting on maps where useful health packs are easy to access without leaving your team for too long.
How to Play the New Support Sombra
The biggest mistake old Sombra players can make is treating the rework like the old Damage hero with some extra healing added on top. Your priority has changed.
Sombra now gets the most value when she moves between her team and aggressive side angles instead of permanently disappearing into the enemy backline.
- Hotfix teammates before they commit. Do not wait until your diver is nearly dead if you already know they are about to engage.
- Use Stealth to find useful angles. Your goal is not always to assassinate a Support. Sometimes the best angle is simply one that lets you safely reach both teams with Cyberspace.
- Place Cyberspace where teams overlap. Healing allies and Weakening enemies at the same time creates far more value than hitting one isolated target.
- Shoot after your utility is active. Machine Pistol still matters, but your abilities should set up the fight first.
- Protect Translocator. Its 7.5-second cooldown and shorter range make reckless teleports more dangerous than before.
- Use Conspirator information. Call out fully charged enemy ultimates and plan your next engagement around them.
A simple rule is to ask whether your flank is helping your team win the current fight. If you spend ten seconds invisible behind the enemy while your tank dies without Hotfix or Cyberspace, the flank probably was not worth it.
The new Sombra still rewards creativity, but she now needs to connect that creativity to what the rest of her team is doing.

Best Sombra Combos and Teamfight Rotations
New Sombra is less about one fixed damage combo and more about sequencing her utility correctly.
Basic Support Rotation
- Apply Hotfix to the teammate most likely to take damage.
- Use Translocator and Stealth to reach a safe side angle.
- Wait for both teams to commit.
- Throw Cyberspace into the main fight.
- Focus your Machine Pistol on a target affected by the pressure.
- Reposition before Translocator becomes your only possible escape.
Dive Rotation
Hotfix your Winston, Doomfist, Wrecking Ball, Genji, Tracer, or another aggressive teammate before they enter. Follow from a different angle and place Cyberspace where the dive target is being pressured.
This forces the enemy to fight while Weakened as your teammate receives both Hotfix healing and Cyberspace healing.
Defensive Cyberspace Rotation
When an enemy team dives your backline, you do not always need to escape immediately. Dropping Cyberspace on your own Supports or Damage heroes reduces the attackers' damage while simultaneously healing your team.
That can be more valuable than using Cyberspace offensively at the start of the fight.
EMP + Life Hack
With Life Hack selected, EMP becomes a powerful two-sided teamfight button. Nearby enemies are hit by EMP while nearby allies receive Hotfix.
Try to use it when both teams are already committed rather than opening every fight from maximum range. You want the enemy disruption and allied healing to matter at the same time.
Best Heroes to Play With Support Sombra
The rework is brand new, so it is too early to declare a fixed Sombra meta. However, her kit clearly favors teammates who can take advantage of healing placed before an engagement and enemies being Weakened during the fight.
Dive Tanks
Winston, Doomfist, and Wrecking Ball are natural partners. Sombra can Hotfix them before they enter, then follow their engagement with Cyberspace without needing to stand directly beside them.
Mobile Damage Heroes
Genji, Tracer, Venture, and other aggressive Damage heroes can benefit from the same setup. Hotfix helps them survive the first part of an engagement while Weaken makes the target's response much less dangerous.
A Reliable Second Support
Sombra does not constantly heal with her weapon. Her healing depends heavily on Hotfix charges and Cyberspace timing.
That makes a second Support with reliable neutral healing particularly useful. Sombra can then focus more heavily on disruption, positioning, and setting up key fights instead of trying to cover every point of chip damage herself.
Sombra Counters and Difficult Matchups
It is also too early to call any hero a definitive hard counter to the new Sombra. What is already clear is that her escape is easier to punish because Translocator travels a shorter distance and has a longer cooldown.
Fast heroes that can chase her after Translocator are therefore dangerous. Winston and D.Va can quickly follow poor escapes, while mobile Damage heroes can punish Sombra if she teleports without reaching real cover.
Brigitte-style close-range peel can also make aggressive side angles harder to use. New Sombra wants Cyberspace to overlap with key enemies, so teams that deny her access to useful positions can reduce a large part of her value.
The main counterplay is therefore not just "reveal Sombra." It is
force her Translocator, track where she lands, and punish her before the 7.5-second cooldown returns.
Sombra players should respond by teleporting toward actual cover rather than simply throwing Translocator as far as possible.
Old Sombra vs New Support Sombra
The rework keeps the visual identity and movement of Sombra, but the reason you use those tools has changed dramatically.

Old Sombra players still benefit from knowing flank routes, health pack positions, Translocator angles, and when enemies are vulnerable. Those skills have not disappeared.
The habit to unlearn is staying away from your team for too long. A Support Sombra who is invisible but unavailable when her team actually needs Hotfix or Cyberspace is giving up much of the value added by the rework.
Is the Sombra Rework a Buff or Nerf?
Calling this a simple buff or nerf is misleading because Blizzard has effectively redesigned Sombra's job.
Her individual kill pressure is clearly lower. Machine Pistol deals less damage, Virus is gone, normal Hack no longer disables enemies, Translocator has a longer cooldown, and EMP charges much more slowly.
In exchange, Sombra now has tools that can affect an entire fight. Hotfix gives her real ally sustain, Cyberspace heals and deals damage simultaneously, Weaken can cut an enemy's output in half, and Conspirator provides valuable ultimate information.
Whether the rework is stronger overall will depend on live win rates, perk choices, team compositions, and how quickly players learn to use Weaken correctly. We will update this guide as the Season 5 meta develops.

Sombra Rework FAQ
Is Sombra a Support hero now?
Yes. Sombra moved from Damage to Support with the October 6, 2026 rework. She is part of the Tactician Support subrole.
Can Sombra still Hack enemies?
Regular Hack has been removed from her normal ability kit. EMP can still Hack enemies, while Hotfix can still hack health packs and most enemy deployables.
Can Sombra still hack health packs?
Yes. Hotfix can target health packs without consuming one of its two ally-healing charges. Hacked health packs remain hacked for 30 seconds.
How much does Sombra's Hotfix heal?
Hotfix immediately heals an ally for 65 health and then heals 25 health per second. It ends after providing 175 total healing or after 12 seconds.
What does Weaken do?
Enemies inside Cyberspace are Weakened. Their own damage output and healing output are both reduced by 50% while they are affected.
Does Sombra still have Stealth?
Yes. Using Translocator gives Sombra Stealth for up to 6.5 seconds. Entering Stealth now takes 0.75 seconds after teleporting.
Does Sombra's EMP still Hack enemies?
Yes. EMP remains Sombra's main way to Hack enemy heroes after the removal of her regular Hack ability. It now deals damage equal to 20% of the enemy's current health and costs significantly more ultimate charge.
What are the best Sombra perks?
Our early default choices are
Life Hack for the Minor Perk and
Cybersecurity for the Major Perk. CTRL ALT ESC is useful when you need more personal survivability, while Data Packet can be strong on maps where Sombra can regularly access useful health packs.
Is the new Sombra still good for flanking?
Yes, but the purpose of the flank has changed. Sombra should use Stealth and Translocator to create useful angles, gather information, and reach positions for Cyberspace rather than spending most of the match trying to operate alone behind the enemy team.
