Doctrine is Overwatchโ€™s vampire-inspired Support hero, joining the full roster with Season 5 on October 6, 2026. His kit revolves around Infuse, a two-charge ability that can empower his weapon, movement, or healing drones.

This guide covers Doctrineโ€™s abilities, Infuse choices, perks, Ultimate, release date, and practical tips based on his completed Hero Trial. Trial-specific balance values may still change before his full release.

Overwatch Doctrine Release Date and Hero Trial

Doctrine releases on October 6, 2026, with Overwatch Season 5: A Grim Doctrine. Blizzard reconfirmed his arrival in the new Doctrine gameplay trailer released on September 29.

His limited Hero Trial has already ended. It ran from September 12 through September 14, allowing players at home and at BlizzCon to test Doctrine before his full launch.

  • Hero reveal: September 12, 2026.
  • Hero Trial: September 12โ€“14, 2026, now finished.
  • Full release: October 6, 2026.
  • Season: Season 5: A Grim Doctrine.
  • Role: Support.
  • Sub-role: Survivor.

Blizzard originally confirmed Doctrine, his trial, and the Season 5 content in its official BlizzCon announcement. The October 6 patch may adjust some ability values from the Hero Trial, so treat the numbers in this guide as the latest tested values until the launch patch notes arrive.

Season 5 also brings the new Watchpoint: Grรญmsvรถtn Escort map, major Roadhog changes, and Sombraโ€™s move into the Support role.

Doctrineโ€™s Abilities Explained

Doctrine combines a mid-range weapon that heals or damages, an ally buff, strong movement, and the ability to empower those tools with Infuse.

The important part is that Infuse has two charges. Doctrine can spend each charge on his Eternal Scepter, Shrouded Momentum, or Invigorating Drones, so much of his skill ceiling comes from deciding which enhanced effect is worth using next.

Here is how Doctrineโ€™s abilities work and what changes when you Infuse them.
Ability Standard Effect Infused Effect
Eternal Scepter A mid-range hitscan weapon that heals teammates or damages enemies. Fires a larger and stronger shot that pierces targets.
Infuse Stores two charges that empower Doctrineโ€™s next eligible action. Infuse itself is not Infused. Each charge is spent on another ability or the Scepter.
Shrouded Momentum Rush horizontally while taking reduced damage. The Hero Trial version provided 50% damage reduction. Allows Doctrine to enter free flight.
Invigorating Drones Sends drones to an ally, healing them and increasing attack speed. The Hero Trial used a 35% attack-speed increase. Also applies the drones and their effects to Doctrine.

Doctrineโ€™s Survivor passive starts passive health regeneration when he uses a movement ability. That gives Shrouded Momentum another defensive purpose beyond simply changing position.

The most important resource is still Infuse. Having two charges gives you flexibility, but using both too quickly can leave you without enhanced movement or burst support when the fight changes.

Which Doctrine Ability Should You Infuse?

There is no single ability that should receive every Infuse charge. The right choice depends on whether you need immediate healing or pressure, a better position, or more value from Invigorating Drones.

A useful starting habit is to avoid spending both charges automatically. If the enemy team still has a way to pressure you, keeping one charge available for Infused Shrouded Momentum can give you an emergency flight option.

Infuse Eternal Scepter for Burst and Piercing Value

The Infused Eternal Scepter produces a larger piercing shot, making it especially useful when multiple players line up through the same lane.

That can create value in either direction. You can use the shot to heal teammates lined up in front of you, pressure enemies sharing a choke, or take advantage of a situation where allies and enemies are stacked through the same sightline.

Do not move into a dangerous position only to create the perfect piercing angle. Doctrine still gets more value from staying alive and continuing to heal, damage, and rebuild Infuse charges.

Infuse Shrouded Momentum for Free Flight

Standard Shrouded Momentum already gives Doctrine horizontal movement and damage reduction. Infusing it adds free flight, making this his strongest repositioning option.

Use it when vertical movement actually solves a problem. Good examples include escaping a dive, reaching high ground, crossing a dangerous angle, or regaining line of sight on teammates.

Choose where you want to finish before taking off. Flying into open space without cover can simply move you from one dangerous position into another.

Infuse Invigorating Drones When You Can Use Both Buffs

Normal Invigorating Drones support one ally with healing and increased attack speed. When Infused, Doctrine also receives the drones.

That makes the enhanced version much more valuable when both Doctrine and his target can stay active. During the Hero Trial, the attack-speed increase was 35%, so the ability could noticeably increase the output of a teammate who was already in a strong attacking position.

Do not select the drone target based only on missing health. An ally who has clear access to the enemy team may get much more value from the attack-speed buff than someone who is already retreating behind cover.

  • Need immediate burst or several targets are lined up: consider Infused Eternal Scepter.
  • Need height, an escape, or a new angle: consider Infused Shrouded Momentum.
  • You and an ally can both keep fighting: consider Infused Invigorating Drones.
  • The enemy is about to pressure you: consider saving one Infuse charge instead of spending both.

The common mistake is treating Infuse like a cooldown that must always be used immediately. Doctrine is stronger when you decide what the next few seconds require first, then spend the charge on the right tool.

How Doctrineโ€™s Deliverance Ultimate Works

Deliverance launches a moving swarm of drones that gives allies overhealth while reducing the maximum health of enemies caught by the swarm.

During the Hero Trial, repeated contact with Deliverance could reduce an enemyโ€™s maximum health by up to 50%, with the maximum-health reduction lasting 8 seconds. Those are Hero Trial values and could still change with the October 6 launch patch.

The important distinction is that Deliverance affects an enemyโ€™s maximum health, not only their current HP. A target affected heavily by the swarm temporarily has a smaller health pool available to work with.

This makes Deliverance more useful when your team is ready to act immediately. The Ultimate creates an advantage for both sides of the fight at once by strengthening allies and weakening enemies, but that advantage matters less if your teammates are too far away to follow up.

  • Before casting: check that teammates are close enough to pressure the affected enemies.
  • While it moves: pressure enemies who stay inside or near the swarm.
  • Use tight areas: enemies have fewer easy paths around Deliverance in chokes and enclosed spaces.
  • Do not cast too late: using it after your team has already disengaged wastes much of its advantage.

Deliverance does not automatically turn a Tank into an easy elimination. Defensive abilities, positioning, healing, and your teamโ€™s ability to follow up still determine whether the reduced health ceiling leads to a kill.

Doctrineโ€™s Perks and Suggested Starting Build

Doctrine selects a Minor Perk at level 2 and a Major Perk at level 3. His four options improve immediate healing, personal sustain, Infuse availability, or Eternal Scepter healing.
Perk Tier Effect
Saving Grace Minor Invigorating Drones heal for 40 health when applied.
Sanguine Siphon Minor Heal for 50% of the damage dealt with Infused Eternal Scepter.
Transfusion Major Damage and healing dealt reduce Infuseโ€™s cooldown.
Cost of Life Major Sacrifice 25 maximum health to increase Eternal Scepter healing by 20%.

Starting Recommendation: Saving Grace and Transfusion

For your first matches, Saving Grace with Transfusion remains the easiest starting combination to learn.

Saving Grace gives Invigorating Drones a simple burst-healing benefit, while Transfusion rewards the damage and healing Doctrine already wants to produce by helping him recover Infuse faster.

Transfusion also fits the core lesson from Doctrineโ€™s Hero Trial: Infuse management is central to the hero. More access to Infuse means more chances to use piercing shots, self-buffed drones, or emergency flight.

Treat this as a starting build rather than a permanent best build. Blizzard can rebalance Doctrine before launch, and different team compositions may make his other perks more useful.

When to Try Sanguine Siphon

Sanguine Siphon heals Doctrine for 50% of the damage dealt by his Infused Eternal Scepter. It is worth testing when you regularly use Infuse offensively and can land the enhanced shot.

The tradeoff is opportunity cost. If you rarely spend Infuse on the Scepter because you need flight or enhanced drones, the perk will activate less often than Saving Grace.

When to Try Cost of Life

Cost of Life increases Eternal Scepter healing by 20%, but Doctrine gives up 25 maximum health to take it.

That can make sense when you have safe positions and want more consistent weapon healing. It becomes harder to justify if the enemy team is already reaching you easily, because the smaller health pool reduces your margin for surviving burst damage.

Also note that the 20% bonus applies specifically to Eternal Scepter healing. It does not increase every healing effect in Doctrineโ€™s kit.

Doctrine Mistakes to Avoid

Doctrine has several answers to the same problem, which makes choosing the wrong answer just as important as mechanical mistakes. Watch for these habits when learning him:

  • Using Infuse without deciding what comes next. Choose whether you need pressure, movement, or enhanced drones before spending a charge.
  • Burning both Infuse charges immediately. Saving one can give you an emergency flight or burst-healing option later in the fight.
  • Buffing an ally who cannot attack. Check whether your drone target has line of sight and a useful target.
  • Flying without a destination. Pick high ground, cover, or another useful landing point before using Infused Shrouded Momentum.
  • Chasing damage while allies collapse. An offensive Scepter opportunity is not always more valuable than keeping your team alive.
  • Using Deliverance after teammates disengage. Its health advantage is strongest while your team can immediately apply pressure.
  • Taking Cost of Life while struggling to survive. More healing output matters less if the reduced health pool repeatedly gets you eliminated.

For your first games after Doctrine releases, review one decision after each death: did I spend my Infuse charges on the right abilities, or would saving one have kept me useful?

That question gets closer to Doctrineโ€™s real learning curve than simply looking at your final healing number.

Who Is Doctrine, and Why Does Doomfist Need Him?

Doctrine is Hero 54 and an ally of Doomfist. His arrival is connected directly to Watchpoint: Grรญmsvรถtn, an Icelandic prison where Doomfist breaks him free.

The prison becomes a new Escort map in Season 5 and forms part of the conclusion to the Reign of Talon story arc.

For players, Doctrineโ€™s immediate challenge is much more mechanical than narrative. Learn when to spend each Infuse charge, choose drone targets that can actually use the attack-speed bonus, and use Deliverance when your team is ready to turn its temporary health advantage into pressure.

Doctrine officially becomes playable again when Overwatch Season 5: A Grim Doctrine launches on October 6, 2026.
