The Hero Proficiency system in Marvel Rivals is getting a major overhaul. The old system was slow, confusing, and full of character-specific grind. The new system is simpler, more consistent, and far more respectful of your time. If you care about cosmetics, titles, borders, or long-term progression, this change matters a lot.

What Changed in the Hero Proficiency System?

The biggest change is how proficiency is earned. Previously, proficiency was split across four categories, including character-specific challenges. Those character-specific objectives are now completely gone. You now earn proficiency through three universal categories only:

  • Time played on the hero
  • Damage and healing done
  • KOs and assists (or final hits for duelists)
This means every hero progresses the same way, regardless of role.

Time Played Is Now More Valuable

Time-based progression has been buffed significantly.

  • 15 minutes played gives 20 proficiency points
  • 60 minutes played gives 80 proficiency points
Previously, one hour only rewarded 60 points. This change alone makes the grind noticeably faster. One category was removed, but its point value has been redistributed across the remaining ones, keeping progression balanced.

Proficiency Rewards Overview

Your current proficiency level carries over. If you were already a Lord, you will start at level 20 in the new system and continue from there.

Rewards are now spread across 70 total levels and include:

  • Titles
  • Sprays
  • KO icons
  • Animated icons
  • Nameplates
  • Borders
  • Units and Unstable Molecules
Most cosmetic rewards are hero-specific, meaning borders and icons only appear when you play that hero.

Notable Milestones

  • Level 5: Knight rank and hero spray
  • Level 10: Captain rank and KO icon

Final Thoughts

The new Hero Proficiency system is cleaner, fairer, and far more rewarding. Removing character-specific challenges was the right move, and improved time-play rewards finally respect player time.

If XP pacing holds up, this will be a strong long-term progression system. If not, at least players now have more flexibility in how they reach the top.
