GTA 6 is making cars more than disposable vehicles you steal and forget about. The latest previews confirm that cars need fuel, while a newer demonstration showed players stopping at gas stations to refuel, repair vehicles, and recharge electric cars.
The big question is how much this will slow down normal GTA gameplay. Here is everything currently known about GTA 6's fuel system, including the roughly 10-second refueling process, gas stations, repairs, EV charging, and the details Rockstar still has not explained.
GTA 6 Refueling System Is Confirmed
For years, vehicle fuel in GTA 6 was mainly discussed because gauges and related systems appeared in leaked development footage. That changed after Rockstar's August 27 gameplay presentation and the private previews held around it.
Multiple preview reports confirmed that
cars in GTA 6 need gas. ComicBook's roundup of the Rockstar North demonstrations specifically noted that players can steal a car only to discover that there is not much fuel left in its tank.
The evidence became even stronger when GTA creator
TGG discussed a separate demonstration with Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson. TGG said the game showed an actual gas station interaction where a vehicle could be refueled or repaired.
Nelson also commented on the refueling process while it was being demonstrated. This moves the mechanic well beyond an interpretation of old leaked footage, although Rockstar has still not published a dedicated Newswire explanation of how the complete fuel system works.

How Refueling Works in GTA 6
The basic GTA 6 refueling process appears to be simple. Players drive to a functional gas station, position the vehicle near the service area, and select the refueling option.
According to TGG's description of the Rockstar North demonstration, choosing to fill the vehicle triggers a short refueling sequence. He estimated that the entire process takes
around 10 seconds.
Rob Nelson pointed out the speed of the process during the demonstration, calling it
"pretty fast for a fill-up." That seems important because Rockstar clearly knows that stopping for fuel could become annoying if it interrupts GTA's driving too often.
However, the 10-second figure should not be treated as an official fixed timer for every vehicle. It is an estimate based on the demonstration TGG saw, not a published Rockstar gameplay statistic.
We also do not yet know whether larger vehicles take longer to fill, whether a nearly empty tank takes longer than a half-full tank, or whether the sequence can be skipped.
How Fuel Works in GTA 6 Vehicles
The most important change from GTA 5 is simple:
cars can actually run low on fuel.
Preview reporting says that stolen vehicles do not automatically come with a full tank. You may break into or carjack a vehicle and discover that the previous owner left you with very little gas.
That adds another factor when choosing a getaway vehicle. A fast car with almost no fuel could be a worse choice than a slower vehicle with enough range to escape.
Earlier leaked development footage also appeared to show
fuel and engine-condition indicators. We covered those systems in our
complete GTA 6 CyberLeek gameplay breakdown.
However, the fuel gauge shown in leaked footage does not appear in exactly the same form in Rockstar's official August 27 Extended Look. The HUD may have changed during development, so the old leaked interface should not be treated as the final design.
Rockstar has not yet revealed:
- How long an average tank lasts
- Whether different vehicles have different tank sizes
- Whether larger engines consume more fuel
- Whether aggressive driving increases fuel consumption
- Whether damaged engines use more fuel
- How much fuel is normally found in stolen cars
These details will decide whether fuel is an occasional immersion mechanic or something players need to manage regularly.
What Happens When You Run Out of Fuel in GTA 6?
Rockstar has
not explained what happens when a vehicle reaches zero fuel.
The obvious possibility is that the engine stops and the player has to abandon the vehicle, but that has not been publicly confirmed. We also do not know whether GTA 6 includes portable fuel cans, roadside assistance, emergency fuel delivery, or another way to rescue an empty vehicle.
There could also be a warning period before the car becomes unusable. Until Rockstar shows the zero-fuel state directly, any exact description of what happens is speculation.
For now, the safest conclusion is that players will need to keep some awareness of their fuel level, especially before long drives or major crimes.
GTA 6 Gas Stations Are More Than Scenery
Gas stations have existed across previous GTA maps, but GTA 6 appears to give them a much more practical role.
Based on the latest demonstration, a gas station can function as a service point where players can:
- Refuel gasoline vehicles
- Repair damaged vehicles
- Recharge electric vehicles
Rockstar's official footage also clearly shows fuel stations around Leonida, including an
Arrow gas station in Trailer 1 and a fuel-price sign in the August 27 Extended Look.
GTA 6 separately includes more interactive stores and robbery targets throughout Leonida. That could make gas-station convenience stores useful stops as well, although Rockstar has not confirmed that every gas station shop can be entered or robbed.
This is an important distinction. We know the vehicle-service functionality exists from the preview, but we do not yet have a complete list showing which services are available at every station.

Vehicle Repairs at GTA 6 Gas Stations
The repair option may be just as useful as refueling. TGG reported that the gas station interaction gave players the choice to
repair the vehicle or refuel it.
That means players may not need to find a full customization garage every time a vehicle is damaged. A nearby gas station could provide a faster way to get a car back into working condition during normal exploration.
This becomes more important because GTA 6 appears to have a much deeper vehicle-damage system than GTA 5. Leaked gameplay showed more detailed body deformation, removable components, and an engine-condition indicator.
Those damage details came from development footage, so the final system may still differ. However, the newly reported repair option strongly suggests that
vehicle condition is something Rockstar expects players to manage.
We also do not know whether gas-station repairs restore a vehicle completely or whether advanced damage still requires a dedicated garage or mechanic.
GTA 6 Electric Vehicles Need Charging
Electric vehicles are not excluded from GTA 6's new energy system. TGG reports that gas stations can also
recharge electric cars instead of filling them with gasoline.
This suggests GTA 6 distinguishes between combustion vehicles and EVs rather than giving every car the same generic fuel meter.
The important details are still unknown. Rockstar has not revealed:
- How long an electric vehicle can drive on a full charge
- How long charging takes
- Whether every gas station includes an EV charger
- Whether charging costs money
- Whether different EVs have different battery capacities
The roughly 10-second figure discussed for refueling should not automatically be applied to EV charging. No separate charging time has been confirmed.
Will Electric Cars Run Out of Battery in GTA 6?
The presence of a recharge option strongly suggests that electric vehicles have an energy limit that needs to be restored. However, the exact zero-battery behavior has not been shown.
We do not yet know whether an EV becomes completely immobile, enters a reduced-power mode, or gives the player another way to recover it.
Which GTA 6 Vehicles Need Fuel?
Cars are the only vehicle category clearly covered by the current preview reporting. Combustion cars need fuel, while electric cars can be recharged.
For other vehicle types, the answer is still unclear.
Currently supported by preview reporting:
- Cars and other normal road vehicles use fuel
- Electric cars use charging instead
Not yet confirmed:
- Motorcycles
- Boats
- Jet skis
- Helicopters
- Planes
- Special vehicles
It would make sense for many of these vehicles to use the same system, but Rockstar has not confirmed it. We will not assume that every vehicle in GTA 6 needs fuel until it is shown or documented.
Why Rockstar Added Refueling to GTA 6
Fuel fits the broader design direction Rockstar has described for GTA 6. Rob Nelson has talked about building many interconnected systems that let players decide how deeply they want to engage with the world.
Instead of every car being a disposable object, GTA 6 gives vehicles more context. Cars can have alarms, trackers, different theft requirements, registration costs, storage, damage, fuel, and potentially much more.
Fuel adds several new decisions:
- A stolen car may not have enough gas for your plan
- Keeping a reliable personal vehicle becomes more useful
- Gas stations become functional locations instead of background scenery
- Long trips across Leonida require slightly more planning
- Vehicle condition and fuel can both matter during a getaway
This also makes more sense because Leonida is much larger than Los Santos. Our
GTA 6 map size and story length guide covers what Rockstar and recent previews have revealed about the scale of the world.
Rockstar seems to be borrowing some of Red Dead Redemption 2's simulation ideas without trying to make GTA 6 move at the same slower pace. The short refueling interaction is one example of that balance.
How Refueling Could Change Police Chases
The fuel system could matter most when something goes wrong.
Imagine leaving a robbery, grabbing the nearest sports car, and discovering that the tank is almost empty. Preview reporting confirms that stolen vehicles can have low fuel, so this is a real possibility rather than just a theory about the system.
That could create several new situations:
- You may need to switch getaway cars because your first vehicle is low on fuel.
- Stopping at a gas station while wanted could expose you to police.
- A damaged car may need both fuel and repairs.
- Checking a vehicle before a major crime may become useful.
- Maintaining a reliable personal vehicle could be safer than stealing something random.
We do not yet know whether refueling is possible while the player has a wanted level. Rockstar could restrict the interaction during police chases, allow it at significant risk, or handle it in another way.
The same uncertainty applies to repairs. Until the full game is available, these chase scenarios remain logical consequences of confirmed systems rather than confirmed mission mechanics.
GTA 6 Fuel System vs GTA 5
GTA 5 treats gasoline mostly as environmental detail. Cars do not normally consume fuel, and players do not need to stop at pumps during Story Mode or GTA Online.
GTA 6 takes a much more simulation-focused approach.

Will Refueling Become Annoying in GTA 6?
This is already one of the more divisive GTA 6 features. Some players like the extra immersion, while others worry that repeatedly stopping for fuel will interrupt the driving, chases, and chaos that define Grand Theft Auto.
Rockstar appears aware of that concern. Nelson's response during the demonstration focused specifically on how quickly the car could be filled, while also acknowledging that player reaction will matter.
The roughly
10-second refueling sequence itself does not sound especially long. The bigger question is how often players need to do it.
If one tank lasts through hours of normal driving, refueling may simply add occasional immersion. If tanks drain quickly, the exact same 10-second animation could become repetitive.
Until Rockstar reveals fuel economy and average vehicle range, it is impossible to judge how intrusive the mechanic really is.
What We Still Don't Know About GTA 6 Fuel
The existence of the fuel system is now much clearer, but most of the balancing details remain unknown.
Rockstar still has not revealed:
- Average range on one tank
- Fuel consumption rates
- Fuel tank sizes
- Whether driving style changes fuel consumption
- Whether vehicle damage affects fuel economy
- Final fuel prices
- EV charging times
- What happens when fuel reaches zero
- Whether portable fuel cans exist
- Whether roadside assistance exists
- Whether missions disable or modify fuel consumption
- Whether motorcycles need fuel
- Whether boats need fuel
- Whether helicopters and planes need fuel
- How the mechanic will work in GTA 6 Online
These are the details that will determine whether refueling becomes a major gameplay system or a light layer of vehicle management.
