The size of GTA 6's Leonida map has been debated for years, but we finally have much better information from Rockstar North. Leonida is reportedly around twice the size of GTA 5's map, while Rockstar says the full map is around three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.
We also have our best GTA 6 story length estimate yet. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said a recent playthrough took him about 80 hours, although that included the main story and some optional objectives.
GTA 6 Map Size & Story Length at a Glance
The latest information gives us a much clearer idea of just how large GTA 6 will be. However, Rockstar has still not released an exact map measurement in square miles or square kilometers.

Some of these comparisons now come directly from Rockstar. The studio told The New York Times that
Vice City is twice the size of Los Santos and that the overall map is
three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Other details were shared by creators and journalists who visited Rockstar North and spoke with Rob Nelson. These include the estimate that Leonida is around twice GTA 5's overall map and that its built-up areas outside Vice City are dramatically larger than those found outside Los Santos.
Rockstar has still not published a final map with an official km² measurement.
Rockstar has separately confirmed that GTA 6 launches on
November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
How Big Is the GTA 6 Map?
The best current information suggests that the
GTA 6 map is roughly twice as large as GTA 5's map. Rockstar has also directly confirmed that Leonida is around three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.
GTA 6 stretches beyond Vice City into islands, wetlands, smaller towns, industrial areas and a large national park. Rockstar has built Leonida as an entire fictional state rather than simply creating another city with countryside around it.
Leonida Is Around Twice the Size of GTA 5's Map
According to accounts from Rockstar North preview attendees, Rob Nelson said that Leonida is around
two times the size of GTA 5's map.
That comparison is much more reliable than trying to calculate GTA 6's size from leaked coordinates or community maps. Until Rockstar releases the complete map, there is still no confirmed number for Leonida's total area in square kilometers or square miles.
This also means claims such as "GTA 6 is exactly 160 km²" should still be treated as estimates rather than official measurements.
Vice City Is Twice the Size of Los Santos
Rockstar has now directly confirmed that
Vice City is around twice the size of Los Santos.
The scale becomes even more impressive once you leave the main city. Preview attendees who spoke with Rob Nelson reported that the
built-up areas outside Vice City amount to roughly 11 times the comparable urbanized area in GTA 5.
That does not mean the entire GTA 6 map is 11 times larger than GTA 5. Instead, it shows how much more civilization Rockstar has placed outside the main city, with smaller towns and populated areas spread across Leonida.
Leonida's extra size is therefore not coming only from empty countryside. Its main city is larger, and there appears to be far more developed land outside Vice City than GTA 5 had beyond Los Santos.
GTA 6 vs Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar told The New York Times that the
overall GTA 6 map is three times as large as the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.
RDR2 already covered several very different landscapes, so a world three times its playable size would make GTA 6 Rockstar's largest open world by a considerable margin.
| Game / Area |
Current GTA 6 Comparison |
| GTA 5 |
Leonida is reportedly around 2x larger |
| Los Santos |
Vice City is around 2x larger |
| GTA 5 urbanized areas outside Los Santos |
Leonida's built-up areas outside Vice City are reportedly around 11x larger |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 |
Leonida is around 3x its playable area |
These comparisons are far more useful than exact fan measurements because Rockstar has still not published Leonida's complete area in square miles or square kilometers.
The Six Confirmed Regions of Leonida
Rockstar has officially introduced
six major areas across Leonida. Together, they show that GTA 6 will include much more than the streets and beaches of Vice City.
- Vice City
- Leonida Keys
- Grassrivers
- Port Gellhorn
- Ambrosia
- Mount Kalaga National Park
Vice City
Vice City is the main urban center of GTA 6 and Rockstar's modern version of Miami. It includes beaches, skyscrapers, nightlife, commercial districts and dense streets packed with NPCs.
Rockstar has made it clear that this is no longer the 1980s Vice City from the 2002 game. The city has been rebuilt around modern Florida culture, social media and the excess that defines Leonida.
Leonida Keys
The
Leonida Keys are a tropical chain of islands connected by long roads and bridges. Jason has connections to the Keys through his work with local drug runners, making the region important to the early story as well as exploration.
The area's open water also gives GTA 6 much more room for boats, watercraft and coastal exploration than GTA 5 offered.
Grassrivers
Grassrivers is Leonida's large wetland region and is clearly inspired by Florida's Everglades. Rockstar has shown mangroves, waterways, wildlife and dangerous animals throughout the area.
It gives GTA 6 a completely different environment from Vice City and should make traveling across Leonida feel much more varied.
Port Gellhorn
Port Gellhorn is a faded coastal town that has seen better days. Rockstar presents it as a former vacation destination filled with cheap motels, closed attractions, empty strip malls and a much rougher local economy.
It looks designed to provide a strong contrast with the wealth and bright lights of Vice City.
Ambrosia
Ambrosia represents Leonida's industrial heartland. The area is built around the Allied Crystal sugar refinery, while Rockstar's promotional material also shows a strong biker presence around the town.
This gives the map another distinct setting, with factories, rural roads and working-class communities away from the coast.
Mount Kalaga National Park
Mount Kalaga National Park sits toward the northern edge of Leonida. Rockstar describes it as wilderness with room for
hunting, fishing and off-road exploration.
It also confirms that GTA 6 will move far beyond Florida-style beaches and flat city streets. Leonida includes large natural areas where players can leave the urban parts of the map behind.
GTA 6's Map Is About Density, Not Just Size
A larger map does not automatically make an open-world game better. One of the biggest differences with GTA 6 appears to be how much Rockstar is placing inside that space.
Rockstar describes GTA 6 as the
"biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet", and the August 27 Extended Look showed why. The footage was captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5 and showed much more interaction across both Vice City and the wider state.
We now also have a number that shows the scale of that extra detail. Rockstar told The New York Times that
GTA 6 contains well over 600,000 animations. For comparison, GTA 5 had around
55,000, while Red Dead Redemption 2 had around
300,000.
Rockstar has also taken a much more handcrafted approach to the world. NPCs were individually art-directed instead of simply being assembled by procedurally mixing body parts and clothing, while individual rooms were designed around the people who use them and the details that belong there.
Some of the biggest changes include:
- More than 600,000 animations, over ten times the number used in GTA 5.
- More detailed NPC behavior and a wider range of reactions to the player.
- Individually designed NPCs rather than relying only on procedural combinations.
- Narrower and more realistic streets, which should make high-speed driving more difficult.
- More interactive safehouses that feel closer to RDR2's camps than old GTA safehouses.
- Water exploration through boats, kayaking and diving.
- More varied wilderness across wetlands, islands and Mount Kalaga.
- Activities throughout Leonida rather than concentrating everything inside Vice City.
This may matter more than the exact size of Leonida. GTA 6 is not simply spreading its content across a larger map. Rockstar appears to be making each part of the world more detailed and interactive at the same time.
How Long Is the GTA 6 Story?
The best GTA 6 story length information currently comes directly from
Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North. Nelson told The New York Times that a GTA 6 playthrough he completed in February 2026 took him around
80 hours.
However, this does
not mean Rockstar has confirmed that the GTA 6 main story alone lasts 80 hours.
Nelson's run included the main campaign and some
optional goals with narrative consequences. A player focusing only on required story missions could therefore finish the campaign faster.
Why GTA 6 Is Not Confirmed as an 80-Hour Main Story
The distinction is important because the 80-hour figure is already being described in some places as GTA 6's official campaign length.
It isn't.
Nelson's playthrough included:
- The main GTA 6 story
- Optional objectives
- Objectives that can affect the narrative
- Normal exploration and travel through Leonida
We also do not know how quickly Nelson played or how much side content he skipped. His 80-hour run is therefore the
best real-world indication of GTA 6's length so far, not an official average completion time.
GTA 6 Story Length vs GTA 5 and RDR2
For comparison, player data collected by HowLongToBeat puts GTA 5's main story at roughly
32 hours, while Red Dead Redemption 2 is around
50 hours when focusing mainly on the story.
That makes Nelson's GTA 6 playthrough significantly longer than the main stories of Rockstar's previous two major open-world games.

| Red Dead Redemption 2 |

| GTA 6 |

Rob Nelson's playthrough with the story and some optional content |
Because GTA 6 has not released yet, its number cannot be compared directly with player averages from GTA 5 and RDR2. We will only know the true average story length once players have completed the game.
Why GTA 6 Could Take Much Longer Than 80 Hours
Players who explore Leonida instead of focusing mainly on the story could spend far more than 80 hours with GTA 6.
Rockstar's Extended Look showed a world filled with activities outside normal story missions. These include different types of exploration and interactions across both Vice City and the rural parts of Leonida.
Activities and systems shown or discussed so far include:
- Boating and other water activities
- Kayaking
- Scuba diving
- Racing
- Gym and fitness activities
- More interactive safehouses
- Vehicle theft that can require special tools
- NPC interactions
- Exploring islands, wetlands and wilderness
- Optional objectives that can affect the story
This makes it reasonable to expect that players who spend time exploring, completing side content and experimenting with GTA 6's open world will take much longer than Nelson's 80-hour run.
There is still
no reliable completionist estimate, however. Claims that GTA 6 will take exactly 100, 150 or 200 hours to fully complete are still speculation until the game is released.
Is GTA 6 Bigger Than GTA 5?
Yes. GTA 6's Leonida map is reportedly around twice the size of GTA 5's map. Rockstar has also directly confirmed that Vice City is around twice the size of Los Santos and that the overall Leonida map is around three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.
The difference becomes even larger when looking at developed areas outside the main city. Preview attendees reported Rob Nelson saying that Leonida has roughly
11 times as much built-up area outside Vice City as the comparable developed areas outside Los Santos in GTA 5.
The exact map area has not been officially published, so current square-mile and square-kilometer measurements should still be treated as estimates.

Final Answer
GTA 6 is shaping up to be Rockstar's largest and most detailed game yet. Leonida is reportedly around
twice the size of GTA 5's map, Rockstar says it is
three times the playable area of RDR2, and Vice City itself is around
twice the size of Los Santos. Preview reports also point to roughly
11 times as much built-up area outside the main city.
Rockstar is filling that space with far more detail too, including
well over 600,000 animations. Rob Nelson's recent playthrough lasted around
80 hours, although that included optional objectives alongside the main story. We still do not have an official main-story-only completion time or an exact square-kilometer measurement for Leonida before GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026.
